Deanna and Nancy

"The Ryver Nymphs"

Deanna and Nancy first met each other many years ago in Kennerdell through mutual acquaintances.  They were only casual friends at that time and didn't know a lot about each other.  Nancy owned a camp in Kennerdell and often visited the area to fish the river and relax on the water.  She loved it so much that she eventually moved there year-round and built a beautiful cabin in place of the camp along the river.

It had been a few years when, by coincidence, Nancy and Deanna met again one evening in 2003 at a local karaoke place.  After talking for awhile, they discovered they had a lot in common.  They both played the guitar, sang very well, liked to fish and boat, owned dogs, and lived on the river not too far from each other.  They immediately became the best of friends.

After singing together a few times at karaoke, they soon realized that their harmonies blended perfectly and that folks enjoyed listening to them sing.  They also liked the same kind of music so they decided to start to practice together in hopes of playing at local establishments.  They spent hours along the river in Nancy's garage, plucking out song after song until they were ready to go public.  At first they played only for family gatherings and friend's parties, but they soon were ready for more professional gigs and felt they needed a catchy name.  They were throwing out ideas one night while singing to boaters on the Allegheny, when Nancy suggested the stage name "The Ryver Nymphs".

The word "nymph" is used to describe an insect larva found in the river (such as a mayfly nymph).  It can also mean a woodland fairy-type creature.  The girls agreed that the name was perfect since they both loved to fish and lived in the woods along the Allegheny River.  Nancy then suggested to changed the "i" in river to a "y" to make it more interesting and to go with the word "nymph".  Hence, the name "The Ryver Nymphs" was chosen.

It only seemed natural that Nancy would join Deanna as part of the crew of RIFFLE RUNNER EXCURSIONS when Navigator Bob first decided to pursue his dream of bringing folks closer to the beauty of the river.  Not only is she very knowledgeable of the history of the Allegheny and it's wildlife, but she sure can fish too!!

Below are some photos of the girls as "The Nymphs" (for short).  Here you can see they "clean up well" but please view the DEANNA and NANCY web pages for pictures of them fishing and boating on the Allegheny.

You never know when the girls will bring their guitars along on the boat and sing a few numbers.  They do everything from Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash to The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd to Sheryl Crow and Janis Joplin.  They also enjoy doing "campfire-type" songs and may just sing without the guitars.  They love audience participation too.  There is nothing like a good, hearty rendition of classic favorites like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" or "Good Old Mountain Dew" to get the kids (and some adults) involved and having fun.  Of course, if you prefer, they won't sing at all so you can just enjoy the sounds of the river.

Whatever you may decide, you can be assured you will have an exciting adventure aboard The Riffle Runner when these two get together to navigate and guide an excursion.
